Do you text and drive? If you are driving and using your cell phone in an irresponsible way, you are 163 times more likely to cause an accident according to a recent study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute.
The National Transportation Safety Board is suggesting that all 50 states ban the use of cell phone devices for any reason by drivers. This means that if you are barreling down the freeway at 80mph and you get that important text you have been waiting for it will have to wait five minutes.
Furthermore, if you feel that you are not important unless you are publicly talking on a phone then it may be possible that you remain a passenger only on American highways if the proposed ban ever takes root.
Stop giving me driving anxiety:
Cell phones are great, but there is a fascination with people who believe that they are really much more important than they really are if they get a phone call during the day. It was not that many years ago that you would have to wait until you got home or pulled over at least before you could make a call.
Now that I have to share the road with cell phone addicted drivers, it makes me want to stop driving altogether. It seems to be much too often that I am cutoff by a moronic driver who is more interested in his precious phone call or text than paying any attention to traffic laws.
Texting on an iPad:
I'm sure it's only a matter of time before people that share my highways are playing popular games on their iPad too. While they are at it, I guess they could make a phone call with their free hand and forget about driving altogether.
Let's be real though:
All sarcasm aside. There were 3,092 accidents last year alone that were credited directly to distracted drivers. Drivers that were likely too busy making a text or a phone call when they could have easily waited to pull over or get to their destination.
In many cases these accidents are difficult for investigators to determine the exact cause of the crash because the faulty drivers do not live through the crash.
Driving is a privilege, not a right. If you have to make that phone call or respond to that text message, please do it in a place that is not going to endanger my life or the lives of innocent people.
And unless you are literally saving the world from a meteor, you are very likely not important enough to need to take your phone call in the first place. Do the roads and the citezens of the world a favor. Call on your own time.
