It sure seems like it took long enough this year, but it’s summertime finally for most of us. For a lot of people, this is going to mean getting a suntan.
While you sit in the sun this summer, following some simple safety tips is so crucial in order to keep your skin healthy and supple, while at the same time, letting some sunlight give you the glow you wanted all winter.
What is a good SPF to use?
While there is no such thing as “safe tanning”, you can use some easy ways that you can try to lessen the harm you are doing to your skin as you tan in the direct sun, or in a tanning bed at your local salon.
If you plan on going to the local beach where the sun comes in direct contact with your skin, it is a good idea to wear a really good sunscreen. You can’t block 100% of harmful UVB’s, but a good sunscreen with an SPF index of 45 is intended to block 98% of the sun’s rays that contain harmful UVB’s.
Something else to keep in mind is that if you will be in the water, the sunscreen you have on will come off a lot faster than it would if you were not in the water. It is a good idea to reapply sunscreen each time you get out of the water, or every couple of hours minimum.
And if you don’t go to the water, and you decide that the local salon is the place to go, keep in mind that you will want to be cautious there as well.
Tanning salons:
Tanning beds in short bursts are safer than direct sunlight, but that is not to say that it is a safe practice by any means. You should also be applying sunscreen if you are going in a tanning bed because your skin will still be exposed to harmful UVB rays that can give you a bad sunburn which causes skin damage.
If you choose to tan in a salon and you have your own goggles, be sure to bring them with you and wear them, or you can simply use the ones that you will find for free in the salon. These goggles play a very important part in protecting your eyes from the damaging UVB rays emitted by the tanning bed.
Safer tanning methods:
If you are looking for complete safety for your skin, but you still want some color, you could always try some of the sunless tanning methods. You can find these lotions almost anywhere and they can give you some skin color for a period of around 3 days.
You could also try spray tanning from your local salon, which can last quite a bit longer than tanning lotions. This kind of sunless tanning can last up to 2 weeks or possibly a little longer, but it is completely sun-free and FDA approved for human use.
Staying protected from the sun means that you can enjoy the outdoors a bit longer without getting burned, so get that sunscreen ready and go have some fun this summer.
