WEBWIRE – Tuesday, September 27, 2011The new Facebook page, How To Cure Anxiety that was just launched today will deal with educating the people who live with anxiety, panic attacks and agoraphobia disorders.
The goal of the page will be to interact with "fans" and passers-by about some of the techniques for controlling anxiety and the related conditions that come with it without the use of medications that can often times become addicting for many anxiety sufferers.
The social media site is increasingly becoming a place where people are searching for answers to the life questions they find themselves asking so often. In an effort to get the message out, Wally Brown, the founder of the page on how to cure anxiety stated: "I believe that people shouldn’t have to live with constant anxiety and the frustration that comes with it in their lives"
Mr. Brown, a longtime suffer of anxiety himself also stated "that once people who bare the burden of anxiety and panic become aware that their situation and disorder is completely treatable, they will gain the hope that is so frequently missing from their lives".
With approximately 40 million Americans suffering from some form of generalized anxiety disorder, it is becoming increasingly popular for individuals to find natural remedies for anxiety that will work for them in a safe manner.

I Found a Way To Deal With Anxiety And Panic That Worked For Me!
I always felt that the worst part of having anxiety and panic attacks was the loneliness that I felt. Nobody that I knew suffered from constant panic, and if they did they certainly didn't tell me about it. I just remember that I felt like I was the only person on earth who was feeling so scared and panicky all of the time.
And do you think that anybody that I told about this would understand? Of course not...they just looked at me like I was crazy. People that don't have an extreme anxiety disorder do not understand it, so it's useless to talk about it to them most of the time. I felt horrible all of the time, and couldn't tell a soul it seemed.
Except the doctors in the emergency room that I would see from time to time. They always seemed a little annoyed at telling me that I was perfectly fine and that I was having a "simple" anxiety attack. In my mind, there was nothing simple about feeling so freaked out.
But it was simple as it turned out. I wasn't dying from my anxiety and I was not going to die from any future anxiety attacks that I would have. Having a good doctor to talk to about this was great for me. With some really easy blood work I was able to learn that even though my anxiety was out of control, I did not have anything wrong with me that was serious in any way.
After adding some light exercise and changing my diet at my doctor's request, I did slowly start to feel a bit better with my anxiety. I wasn't cured by any means, but I did start to notice that I had much less in the way of anxious thoughts for the most part.
The chemical imbalance in my body was the thing that made me feel this way, and once I really got that into my head the changes came much faster. I learned how to cure anxiety without relying on some dangerous medication and I learned how to enjoy life for the first time in years.
It wasn't exactly magic, but I was able to do some new things that had previously been much harder when I was anxiety ridden. Just by doing some light cardio on a regular basis my body was producing more serotonin, which increased my mood because of this essential brain chemical. You hear all the time that exercise makes people feel good, and this is because it is a scientific fact, not just an old-wives tale.
On top of feeling more calm in general, the exercise also really helped me shed some weight and feel better about myself as a whole which was exactly what I needed to start feeling better.
This holistic approach to my disorder was what led me to finally find out how to cure anxiety without having to rely on a medication from the pharmacy. I learned how to change my behavior and that is why I am anxiety free to this day.
I Survived Anxiety And Panic With Exercise! - How Are You Living With Your Anxiety?
If your anxiety and panic attacks are making you feel extremely lonely, you are certainly not alone. So many people suffer from this disorder that makes them so anxious and fearful of their lives, that feeling so alone is very easy to do.
That's how I felt for many years of my life when I suffered with extreme anxiety and panic. I was convinced that I was going to die all the time and it took me a very long time to finally realize that I wasn't. The worst part though was feeling like no matter how I explained my panic attacks and anxiety, nobody got how scary it was to me.
If they didn't get that, then they certainly wouldn't get how scared I was when I would have to get myself to the hospital. Some of my attacks would be so frightening and last so long that I started to think that other things were wrong with me. Worse yet, I started to feel like I was going to die one day from this anxiety.
I am still alive though because I found a wonderful doctor who finally got me to believe that I only had anxiety and nothing more severe wrong with me. This took a little bit of blood work for him to be sure of, but once I knew that I was anxious and nothing else was the matter with me medically, I did feel a bit better.
It was relieving to know that there was nothing seriously wrong with my health, but I still had this anxiety to deal with. I started exercising a little bit and it actually helped to use up some of my nervous energy, which made me feel a little bit more calm on most days. I wasn't cured yet, but I was on my way to feeling better for sure.
I would eventually learn how to cure anxiety, and it was all because I finally learned that what was wrong with me was in my head and not in my body. Once I really got this concept, it seemed much easier to make the desired changes to my life that I needed to in order to rid myself of anxiety once and for all.
And it did work for me too. Just by adding a bit of exercise to my life, I was increasing the amount of the chemical serotonin in my body. Serotonin is responsible for our mood, and so it stands to reason that making more of it through something like exercise will have great benefits.
I can't say that exercise was my cure for anxiety, but the difference it made in how I generally felt was pretty amazing to say the least, and it was certainly much better than I had felt in years.
Finding a way to get me on the road to finding out how to cure anxiety for myself was a great first start for me. Because I made some simple changes in my life, I am now living a life free from anxiety and panic attacks for good!
What Can You Do To Cure Anxiety Without Medication? - I Used Exercise And Live Anxiety Free Now!
Do you suffer in silence from anxiety and panic attacks? If so you are hardly alone. There are countless people out there who are just like you, and suffering from anxiety and panic attacks constantlly can be a very lonely place to be. I know, because I suffered in my own silence with extreme anxiety for years of my life.
I spent those years feeling like anxiety attacks were going to kill me someday. I was scared every minute of the day, and no matter how I tried to talk to other people about it, I just felt like nobody really understood. Furthermore, I had no idea how I was going to ever find out how to cure my anxiety and get back to living a normal life.
And forget about telling people how many times I ended up in emergency rooms thinking I was having a heart attack at the age of 26, they really wouldn't have understood that. I would ultimately end up in hospitals a few times before finally believing that I was not going to die every time I had a severe anxiety attack.
After a while I found a great doctor that looked after me though. I explained what I was going through and he assured me that I was just having severe anxiety attacks, and nothing worse. To be sure of this, I had to get a bit of blood work done to make absolutely sure that I wasn't suffering from a medical condition that would give me symptoms similar to anxiety so he would know for sure.
And it turned out that the only thing that was really wrong with me was that I had an anxiety disorder. Even though it was tough to know that there was anything wrong with me at all, it was good to know that I was only suffering from something in my mind. At my doctor's advice, I started getting some exercise which helped keep me a lot more calm than I had been previously.
I finally started to realize that while an anxiety disorder was not much fun at all, it was something that I just might be able to control. Once you do figure out that anxiety is not going to kill you, it is pretty amazing how you can change things in your own life for the better of your mental health.
At times I did take medications, but I always found that they just made me feel worse. I learned that when I made some of the simple lifestyle changes is really when I started to feel better in my mind. Even with light exercise, I noticed an increase in my overall mood. This is because exercising releases serotonin into the body, and this chemical is responsible for our moods.
On top of feeling accomplished by doing regular exercise, the actual benefit it had on my thoughts was pretty amazing even though I still had a ways to go.
This and many other changes that I made in my life is what finally got me on the road to finding out how to cure my anxiety for good.
You Can Cure Your Anxiety Forever - Find Out What I Did To Eliminate Panic From My Life
The thing about anxiety and panic attacks is the lonileness that the sufferer feels. Having constant panic attacks makes you feel alone and like you are the only person in the world going through your private hell. I suffered like this for many years of my life, afraid to do anything or see anyone because I had extreme panic and agoraphobia.
I was always so afraid that I was losing my mind or even worse...dying from these anxiety attacks. I tried telling others about what I was going through, but only found that "normal" people didn't understand half of what I was going through. I had to live with my scary and constant thoughts all by myself.
On top of that, I was in and out of the hospital more than a few times because I thought I was having heart attacks. I constantly felt like I was on the verge of dying, and even though doctor's would tell me that I was fine, it was hard to believe them at first.
Eventually though, I found a great family doctor that really listened to me about what I was going through with my anxiety. I had to have a bunch of blood tests done so that he could rule out any possible health conditions that may have been making me feel the way I was, but that was all pretty easy.
Once we determined that I was safe from death, he helped me get into an exercise regime that really helped get some of my anxiety under control. I still didn't like that I had something "wrong" with me, but I was slowly but surely feeling better than I had in years.
There is something to be said for how good it makes you feel to know that you are not losing your mind when you have this disorder. That knowledge is the key to really making the changes necessary so that you can learn how to cure anxiety for good, and without being addicted to a medication.
I started to find that if I felt a bit anxious, I could so some really simple things to calm me down. I took up running and found that the more tired-out I got after a workout, the more calm I would feel a few minutes later. I'm not saying run a mile everytime you feel anxious, but if you can do any kind of exercise when you feel a panic attack coming on, it can really make a big difference in your mood.
Exercising produces serotonin in your body, which is responsible for your mood. So it only makes sense that regular exercise will increase your mood in a totally natural way, and keep you much calmer than you would think.
The best way to learn how to cure anxiety is to realize that there are many things that you can do about it.

Can You Learn How To Cure Anxiety? edit delete

Anxiety is a learned behavior, so wouldn't it stand to reason that it could also be unlearned?
I don't ever remember seeing people in my life anxious or stressed that I knew of, but I was just a kid...what did I know.
When people see others in their life acting in an anxious manner for years, they may start to act like them without ever knowing why. By the time a person realizes that they have developed an anxiety disorder with extreme panic attacks, it is much too late.
For me, learning how to control my anxiety and cure my panic attacks was a very long road indeed. My learned behavior had to be unlearned, and since I was feeling worse each day I had to unlearn these behaviors or suffer the consequences.
I did find help though, and cured my anxiety problems once and for all. It's nice that in this day and age we have websites that can help us to not feel so alone in this struggle between nerves and realistic thoughts.
http://www.squidoo.com/how_to_cure_anxiety was one such site that helped me a lot to find out information on anxiety and find a way out of it. By simply learning that I was not alone, I gained so much in such a little time.
This is also a time of social media running rampant, and what better way to find a way to get over my panic episodes and agoraphobia than the largest social network in the world...Facebook!
I was searching Facebook one day and found a site on anxiety at www.facebook.com/howtocureanxiety and was floored at how the information seemed to fit my life.
Regardless of where any anxiety sufferer gets their information about anxiety though, it is most important to know that they don't have to be alone and scared anymore.
I unlearned my anxious behavior, and I know that with the right tools and resources that others can stop their anxiety and panic as well.
What a great thing here!

Lomo Saltado: A taste of Peru « Our Life in Meals
The commercials for Match.com state that today, one in five relationships begin online, and I believe it. These days, it seems like everyone knows somebody who’s found their significant other through a dating site, and as someone who never experienced online dating (and is thankful for it after some of the stories I’ve heard!), I’m amazed. Across counties, cities, and countries, people are able to meet online and eventually meet in person and get to know each other.
This is how one our good friend Ken met his fiancé, who will soon be on her way from Peru to begin her life here in Fresno, California. Though we haven’t met her yet, Jan and I are excited to welcome her here when she arrives. So when we found ourselves passing by a Peruvian restaurant during a trip to Anaheim earlier this year, it was the perfect opportunity to both taste something new, and be able to report that we had, in fact, tasted Peruvian food.
We were told that one of the signature dishes of Peru was Lomo Saltado, made with thin strips of beef sirloin cooked with onions and tomatoes and served with white rice and French fries. As the dish came to the table, I smelled the beef and onions, with a hint of mouth-watering Chinese food aroma thrown in. While I was initially thrown off by this unlikely combination of scents and flavors, as I ate, that didn’t matter so much—it tasted good.
Lomo Saltado reminds me of a few things I love: beef fajitas, chili cheese fries, and Asian stir fry. Not dishes I would ordinarily group together in the same sentence, but somehow, it seems to work. After all, I wouldn’t give a second thought to eating a steak sandwich with onions and tomatoes along with a side of French fries. So if I could get that same meal without the bread, why not?
On every table of the restaurant, there was also a large bottle of green sauce in a clear squeeze bottle. I kept tasting the sauce over and over, feeling like there was something familiar in it, but was unable to put my finger on it. I asked the waitress what was in the sauce, but she only shrugged her shoulders and said she didn’t know.
At home, we researched recipes in order to recreate Lomo Saltado in our own kitchen. The first time we made it, Jan quickly sautéed the beef and served it over a bed of steak fries (we skipped the white rice). With plenty of juice from the beef to drizzle over the potatoes, the meal was delicious. But then, Jan made the dish again, this time with the green sauce, and that was what took the dish up to the next level. Turns out, that familiar, yet unidentifiable ingredient from the restaurant’s green sauce was feta cheese, something I hadn’t even considered a possibility.
To someone from Peru, our Lomo Saltado might taste far from authentic, but at least they might appreciate the effort, we figured. Jan and I talked about how we could serve the dish and do our best to help Ken’s fiancé feel at home. We patted ourselves on the back, grinning and feeling proud of ourselves. We told Ken we were ready for her to get here. But then he only laughed, and told us that she was a vegetarian.
I sighed, shaking my head. Well, I thought, of course I would have known that if I’d seen her profile. Guess I still haven’t caught up to these online times. With a few spears of asparagus and romaine lettuce as tasting vehicles, I determined another fact: the green sauce doubles as a great salad dressing.
Lomo Saltado
Ingredients
- 1 lb beef sirloin
- 2 large tomatoes
- 1 medium onion
- Frozen or freshly prepared French fries
For the marinade
- 2 teaspoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons canola oil
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the green sauce
- 1 cup cilantro
- ½ jalapeno, seeded
- 4 oz. feta cheese
- ¼ cup olive oil
- ¼ cup canola oil
- ¼ cup water
- 2 teaspoons red wine vinegar
- Juice of 1 lime
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Directions
- Slice the beef into thin strips and set aside.
- Combine the ingredients for the marinade in a medium bowl, then add the beef strips and stir until coated.
- Marinate in the refrigerator for about an hour.
- While the beef is marinating, make the green sauce. Use a food processor to combine cilantro, jalapeno, feta cheese, olive oil, canola oil, water, vinegar, lime juice, salt, and pepper. Pour into desired serving container and set aside.
- Before removing the beef from the refrigerator, slice the tomatoes and onion into large pieces.
- If cooking the French fries in the oven, allow enough time to begin heating according to package directions. If deep frying the French fries, fry in batches while the beef is cooking with the onions and tomatoes on the stovetop.
- Begin sautéing the onion until it begins to brown. Add the beef to the pan including any remaining liquid from the marinade.
- Sauté until only a little pink remains on the meat, then add the tomatoes.
- Stir and cook until the beef is completely cooked. Serve over a bed of French fries, drizzling the green sauce on top or serving the sauce on the side.

This looks incredible! I have to try making this cake, but I am still learning basic baking and I feel like I'm going to mess it up.
I still am going to try though, because cherries are my favorite and this should taste good even if I mess up a tad...

Your body has its own system that it uses to deal with illnesses and sickness. So if you don’t want to use a prescription pill or potion for anxiety and panic attacks, then you may want to try using a herbal remedy for anxiety to see if you can get some relief.
Herbs are a great way to reduce stress and anxiety, and there are also a few of them to choose from.
One of the more popular herbs that you can find is chamomile. It comes in many forms, including teas which you will find at your local market. If you want to be relaxed, chamomile will do the trick. Also, it is considered pretty safe so using it long-term and daily should not be a problem for you.
If you have anxiety you are likely stressed as well, which can mean that you aren’t getting much sleep at night. Using a natural remedy for anxiety like chamomile is good because it has sedative properties which helps to calm you down so that you can finally sleep.

Spray Tanning – Indoor Tanning Gets A Bad Rap
When you get a spray tan, you will generally have this done in a salon using spraying tanning machines. The rooms in the salons are designed so that you get the right amount of solution on your skin. You will typically go into a booth where the tanning solution will be sprayed on your body.
There are 2 methods used in most tanning salons. One way is to have the beauty technician spray you and the other is to use the spray machines that spray on the solution. Based on your preferences you should be able to choose the method that suits your taste.
The spray tanning by machines have some side effects for some customers , so most of them don’t like to use spray tanning machines in salon. Regardless of which method you choose, you want to make sure that the technician and staff are professional and knowledgeable.
While doing manual operation spray tanning the technician will need to make sure the solution does not get into your nose or mouth. Today more advance spray tanning machines have come out in beauty salons so that you can choose how light or dark you would like to be.
While most people look better with a bit of a tan, your skin tone and color will help determine if you will look better with just a light coat or a darker tan. More DHA in the tanning solution will give you a darker tan, and less will be lighter. The amount of DHA and therefore the darkness of the tan is going to depend on the skin type.
For a typical person with medium skin tone, you can expect the amount of DHA to be around 8 – 10 percent. And conversely you can expect less DHA if you are of a lighter skin tone. For darker skin tones the DHA concentration is more compared to the medium toned skin and the fair toned skin. Now when you go into your local tanning salon, you will know some tips to make your tanning experience just a little bit better.

Yet another popular herb that is used for anxiety and even depression is St. John’s Wort. People in the United States have been using this herb for depression and anxiety for a long time, and it is not known to be dangerous to take for most people.
But sometimes anxiety just gets too high for some people. When this happens, people tend to think that the only answer for them is to go to the doctor’s office for a prescription for the most popular anti-anxiety remedy.
Taking a prescribed drug is fine as long as you don’t use it too long, if you have constant anxiety though, it will be much safer to use something herbal for your symptoms. Many people have bad reactions to prescription medications though, and there is always a chance of withdrawal when stopping them.
It is often the case that taking a medication for anxiety can leave you feeling even worse when you take it than the anxiety itself made you feel. Herbal remedies for anxiety are generally safer for you to take, but just be sure that you are supervised by a qualified holistic provider or your regular doctor before taking any herbal remedies.
Chances are that if you start an herbal routine for your anxiety you could end up feeling better very soon. Instead of living in fear of the next wave of panic that is going to ruin your day you can go back to having some fun in life. There are a few ways in which you can learn how to cure anxiety without medication , you just have to be open to new things.
The Associated Press: No polygraph for Ga. inmate as execution nears
No polygraph for Ga. inmate as execution nearsBy GREG BLUESTEIN, Associated Press – 3 hours ago
ATLANTA (AP) — With less than half a day left to live, Troy Davis faced execution Wednesday despite a furious campaign in the U.S. and Europe to win clemency for the 1989 slaying of a Georgia policeman he claims he did not commit.
Supporters planned vigils outside Georgia's death row prison in Jackson and protests at U.S. embassies in Europe. Davis' attorneys lost a bid to give him a polygraph test to prove his innocence but planned another late appeal, this one aimed at blocking the execution by convincing a judge that some of the original evidence was questionable.
Defense lawyer Stephen Marsh told The Associated Press that the Georgia Department of Corrections denied his request to allow Davis to take a polygraph test. Marsh had said he hoped the polygraph would convince the state pardons board to reconsider a decision against clemency.
After winning three delays since 2007, Davis lost his most realistic chance at last-minute clemency this week when the state pardons board denied his request. He was set to be executed by injection at 7 p.m. Wednesday for the 1989 killing of Mark MacPhail, an off-duty police officer who was working as a security guard in Savannah when he was shot dead rushing to help a homeless man who had been attacked.
Some witnesses who fingered him at trial as the shooter later recanted, and others who did not testify came forward to say another man did it. But a federal judge dismissed those changed and new accounts as "largely smoke and mirrors" after a hearing Davis was granted last year to argue for a new trial, which he did not win.
Davis didn't want a last meal. He planned to spend his final hours meeting with friends, family and supporters. According to an advocate who met with him late Tuesday, he was upbeat, prayerful and expected last-minute wrangling by attorneys.
Attorney Stephen Marsh said he had asked state prisons officials and the pardons board if they would allow a polygraph test. A prisons spokeswoman said she was unaware of the request and the pardons board didn't immediately respond.
"He doesn't want to spend three hours away from his family on what could be the last day of his life if it won't make any difference," Marsh said.
Davis has received support from hundreds of thousands of people, including a former FBI director, former President Jimmy Carter and Pope Benedict XVI. Some of his backers resorted to urging prison workers to strike or call in sick Wednesday, and they considered a desperate appeal for White House intervention. And some of Davis' supporters were considering whether to ask President Barack Obama to intervene, a move that legal experts said was unlikely.
In Europe, where the planned execution has drawn widespread criticism, politicians and activists were making a last-minute appeal to the state of Georgia to refrain from executing Davis. Amnesty International and other groups planned a protest outside the U.S. Embassy in Paris later Wednesday and Amnesty also called a vigil outside the U.S. Embassy in London.
Parliamentarians and government ministers from the Council of Europe, the continent's human rights watchdog, called for Davis' sentence to be commuted. Renate Wohlwend of the Council's Parliamentary Assembly said that "to carry out this irrevocable act now would be a terrible mistake which could lead to a tragic injustice."
The U.S. Supreme Court gave him an unusual opportunity to prove his innocence last year, but his attorneys failed to convince a judge he didn't do it. State and federal courts have repeatedly upheld his conviction.
Prosecutors have no doubt they charged the right person, and MacPhail's family lobbied the pardons board Monday to reject Davis' clemency appeal. The board refused to stop the execution a day later.
"He has had ample time to prove his innocence," said MacPhail's widow, Joan MacPhail-Harris. "And he is not innocent."
Spencer Lawton, the district attorney who secured Davis' conviction in 1991, said he was embarrassed for the judicial system that the execution has taken so long.
"What we have had is a manufactured appearance of doubt which has taken on the quality of legitimate doubt itself. And all of it is exquisitely unfair," said Lawton, who retired as Chatham County's head prosecutor in 2008. "The good news is we live in a civilized society where questions like this are decided based on fact in open and transparent courts of law, and not on street corners."
Davis supporters said they will push the pardons board to reconsider his case. They also asked Savannah prosecutors to block the execution, although Chatham County District Attorney Larry Chisolm said in a statement he was powerless to withdraw an execution order for Davis issued by a state Superior Court judge.
"We appreciate the outpouring of interest in this case; however, this matter is beyond our control," Chisolm said.
Davis' lawyers drew up a late appeal asking a local judge to block the execution over evidence they object to. Defense attorney Brian Kammer told The Associated Press he would file the appeal in Superior Court in Butts County, home of the state's death row, when it opens Wednesday.
The motion disputes testimony from a ballistics examiner who claimed that the bullets fired in a previous shooting that Davis was convicted of may have come from the same gun that fired at MacPhail. And it challenged eyewitness testimony from Harriet Murray, a witness who claimed at the trial to have identified Davis as the shooter.
It asks the court to vacate Davis' execution, or at least delay it by 90 days, on grounds that it was "based on false, misleading and materially inaccurate evidence."
MacPhail was shot to death Aug. 19, 1989, after coming to the aid of Larry Young, who was pistol-whipped in a Burger King parking lot. Prosecutors say Davis was with another man who was demanding that Young give him a beer when Davis pulled out a handgun and bashed Young with it. When MacPhail arrived to help, they say Davis had a smirk on his face as he shot the officer to death.
Witnesses placed Davis at the crime scene and identified him as the shooter. Shell casings were linked to an earlier shooting that Davis was convicted of. There was no other physical evidence. No blood or DNA tied Davis to the crime and the weapon was never found.
Davis' attorneys say seven of nine key witnesses who testified at his trial have disputed all or parts of their testimony.
The state initially planned to execute him in July 2007 but the pardons board granted him a stay less than 24 hours before he was to die. The U.S. Supreme Court stepped in a year later and halted the lethal injection two hours before he was to be executed. And a federal appeals court halted another planned execution a few months later.
Over the years, Davis has picked up high-profile support from a host of dignitaries and dozens of federal lawmakers. Conservative figures have also advocated on his behalf, including former U.S. Rep. Bob Barr, ex-Justice Department official Larry Thompson and one-time FBI Director William Sessions.
The U.S. Supreme Court granted Davis a hearing to prove his innocence, the first time it had done so for a death row inmate in at least 50 years. At that June 2010 hearing, two witnesses testified that they falsely incriminated Davis at his trial when they said Davis confessed to the killing. Two others told the judge the man with Davis that night later said he shot MacPhail.
Prosecutors, though, argued that Davis' lawyers were simply rehashing old testimony that had already been rejected by a jury. And they said no trial court could ever consider the hearsay from the other witnesses who blamed the other man for the crime.
U.S. District Judge William T. Moore Jr. sided with them. He said the evidence presented at the hearing wasn't nearly enough to prove Davis is innocent and validate his request for a new trial. He said while Davis' "new evidence casts some additional, minimal doubt on his conviction, it is largely smoke and mirrors."

Texas prepares execution for dragging death - US news - Crime & courts
JASPER, Texas — The bloodstains are long gone. So is the red paint investigators sprayed along a nearly 3-mile stretch of bumpy asphalt on Huff Creek Road to mark the grisly final moments of James Byrd Jr.'s life.
What remains are the scars from the hate crime more than 13 years ago that shocked the nation and branded this Texas town near the Louisiana border with a racist stigma after a black man was chained to the back of a pickup truck and dragged to his death.
Lawrence Russell Brewer, 44, one of two purported white supremacists condemned for Byrd's death, is set to be executed Wednesday for participating in fastening Byrd to the truck, pulling him along the road and dumping what was left of his shredded body outside a black church and cemetery.
Brewer's scheduled execution puts the spotlight back on a town still trying to exorcise the perception of racism that's resurfaced recently with an attempt to oust three black city council members who helped confirm a black man as police chief. But residents, city leaders and even researchers who have studied the infamous community say the dragging death has given Jasper an unfair reputation.
"The irony is how undeserved the label they got was," said Cassy Burleson, a researcher at Baylor University who has been studying Jasper since the Byrd case. "Just looking at the facts, they were one of the most progressive communities in Texas."Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice via AP file
Lawrence Russell BrewerJasper, a town of about 7,300, where whites comprise just under half the population, has no history of notable hate crimes before or since the dragging death that would be indicative of a racially insensitive town. Several blacks have served in prominent positions, including mayor, school board president and held school board seats.
The rest of the country perceived the town quite differently, fed in part by television footage of the Ku Klux Klan rallying on the courthouse square and the Black Panthers driving around town, both groups trying to recruit members. Neither recruited well in Jasper because the town "did not encourage that presence, buy into it or feed it," said Mia Moody, Burleson's research partner.
Byrd's brutal death put Jasper, a typical East Texas town with the obligatory Dairy Queen and Walmart and a handful of fast-food places some 60 miles from the nearest interstate highway, under a national spotlight.
"Everywhere you went, anywhere in the country, once people found out you were from Jasper, Texas, they wanted to ask you about it," says Mike Lout, the mayor and owner of the town radio station. "Everybody first was shocked and appalled and not proud of it. They talked about it so much in the days past it, I think most people wanted to put it out of their minds."
'It makes us look like idiots'
If Jasper was hoping to rehabilitate its sullied image, the squabble over the hiring of a black police chief in April won't help. Several rejected applicants have sued, alleging reverse discrimination, and three of the four black council members who voted for the appointment are facing a recall election in November. Recall supporters say the chief was selected over more qualified applicants, including the former second-in-command who is white."It's heartbreaking," said Billy Rowles, who was sheriff at the time of Byrd's murder. "A lot of effort and hard work and soul-searching went into trying to live down the stereotype. It's so easy to get back into that mode."

Besides Brewer, who is scheduled for lethal injection Wednesday, John William King, 36, also was convicted of capital murder and sent to death row. His case remains under appeal. A third man, Shawn Berry, 36, received a life prison term.
Testimony showed the three offered the 49-year-old Byrd a ride in Berry's pickup truck early on June 7, 1998. Byrd wound up bound by his ankles with a heavy logging chain attached to the bumper, bouncing from side to side as he desperately tried to limit his injuries by lifting himself. At a sharp left curve in the road, he whipsawed to the right and struck a concrete culvert.
A pathologist testified Byrd had been alive until there, where he was decapitated. An investigator later would write on the road in spray paint: "Head."
Brewer told Beaumont television station KFDM from death row that he participated in the assault on Byrd but had "nothing to do with the killing as far as dragging him or driving the truck or anything." He told the station his execution would be a "good out" and he's "glad it's about to come to an end."
For Jasper, the stigma survives.
"That's what they recognize," said Sheriff Mitchel Newman, who recently was arranging a business trip through someone in Colorado who mentioned the case. "I'll be glad when it's over. It's not fair. It makes us look like idiots."
