How to Decide on Which Diet is Right for You

How to Decide on Which Diet is Right for You

One of the hardest parts of dieting to lose weight is deciding which diet to choose. An article in the Journal of the American Medical Association reports that more than 1000 diet books are now available and they warn that many of the popular ones offer advice which is potentially dangerous.

The article compares the Atkins, Ornish, Weight Watchers, and Zone Diets for weight loss and reduction of heart disease.

The conclusions of the study were as follows:

• All of the diets if followed can reduce weight and risk of heart disease.

• All of the diets were hard for the participants to stick to (especially the Atkins and Ornish which were considered to be more extreme).

• By the end of one year the majority of participants were no longer following any of the diets and most of the weight lost had been regained and heart risk factors returned to pre-diet levels.

The authors of the study concluded this:

To optimally manage a national epidemic of excess body weight33 and associated cardiac risk factors, practical techniques to increase dietary adherence rates are urgently needed.”

In other words, if a diet is not practical it is not going to be followed.

So, what is the solution? It’s actually quite simple.

We need to learn the proper way to eat as a lifestyle.

This will provide the freedom and flexibility to eat what works for us with only a few logical restrictions.
